What are the registration requirements?

All applicants applying to work as a nurse or midwife in the UK must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).  The NMC is the regulator for nursing practice in the UK and is responsible for upholding safe, effective and kind standards of care.

The NMC registration process requires overseas applicants to pass a two-stage application process called the Test of Competency (ToC).  This is broken down into two stages:

Stage 1-Completion of a multi-choice computer-based test (CBT) which is accessible around the world for applicants to access in their home countries.

Stage 2-Completion of  a practical test held in the UK.  This test is called the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

To pass the ToC, overseas Nurses must also meet the English language standards set by the NMC.

Further information on the registration process can be found in the table below.
